Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to explain the effect of cultural capital on religious lifestyle. Theoretically, this study uses the theory of lifestyle and cultural capital developed by Bourdieu. This analysis is based on a survey including 390 students of Mazandaran University. According to the research findings, the level of religious lifestyle is relatively higher than the level of cultural capital (13.02 out of 20.00 and 6.66 out of 20.00, respectively). Furthermore, the multivariate results of this analysis show that cultural capital and its two dimensions have significant and reverse effects on religious lifestyle, whereas institutionalized aspect of cultural capital plays a significant and direct impact on religious lifestyle. The dimensions of cultural capital could explain 31 percent of changes in the religious lifestyle. In conclusion, students do not tend to entirely reject their cultural and religious values, but prefer to modify them in order to open further opportunity of choices.
