Abstract

 
Academic freedom is not only recognized as one of the higher education systems’ fundamental principles but also holds a long historical root in the classic universities of the world. The concept of academic freedom is significantly associated with socio-cultural values. This study aims to investigate the place of academic freedom in the higher education system of Iran. Methodologically, this study is based on in-depth interview method. The research sample includes 13 academic staff of the universities in Iran. The results of this study consist of the following parameters. First, the five dimensions of academic freedom including challenges, solutions, prerequisites, obligations, and limitations for academic freedom. Second, 17 main categories and third, 148 sub-classified categories. Finally, the correlations between these three parameters have been examined in the present study.
