Abstract

Objectives: Polygamy is a traditional form of marriage in Islamic societies, particularly within the cultural context of Afghanistan. However, with the expansion of globalization, its traditional functions have undergone significant transformation and, in many cases, have come into conflict with modern family values and structures. The present study aims to explore the causes and consequences of polygamy within the meaning-making system of polygamous men, seeking to uncover how men rationalize, interpret, and experience this familial lifestyle. Methods: This study was conducted using a qualitative approach and thematic analysis method. The target population consisted of polygamous men residing in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. The research sample included 27 polygamous men selected through purposive and snowball sampling, with attention to cultural, social, and economic diversity to capture varied perspectives. Results: The study yielded nine main themes categorized into two overarching domains. The semantic implications of polygamy encompassed six primary themes: institutionalized culture, stigmatization of the first wife, preference for sons, lack of awareness, religious commitment, and aspirations for economic and social improvement. The consequences of polygamy included three major themes: biological dissatisfaction, financial tensions, and life satisfaction. Conclusion: The findings reveal that no single cultural, social, or religious factor alone sufficiently explains the decision to engage in polygamy; rather, it is the interplay of these factors within the specific social context that leads men to adopt this marital practice. Nonetheless, the lived experiences of polygamous men indicate that polygamy often results in increased family tensions, economic pressures, and deteriorating mental health. This study can inform policymakers and social institutions in raising public awareness about the responsibilities and challenges associated with polygamy, helping to prevent impulsive decisions in this regard.
