Abstract

Objectives: This study proposes a conceptual–methodological framework for the historical sociology of Iranian music and employs it to examine the transformations of dastgāh music during the Qajar era. Previous scholarship—due to its predominantly descriptive orientation or its focus on only one analytical dimension (individual, institutional, or macro-structural)—has tended to overlook the complex interplay between agency and structure, as well as the role of national and transnational factors. Methods: Building on a qualitative multi-level analytical approach, the study introduces a four-level model comprising the individual, collective, national, and international layers of analysis. This framework enables a multidimensional and contextually grounded interpretation of the historical trajectory of Iranian music, situating musical developments within their broader social, political, and cultural environments. Findings: The principal contribution of this study is the articulation of the theoretical and methodological foundations of the proposed model, along with a demonstration of its applicability in analyzing the historical evolution of Iranian dastgāh music. The findings indicate that the development of dastgāh music during the Qajar era can be divided into four distinct phases, each shaped by a constellation of structural and individual determinants. Conclusion: The proposed framework is expected to provide a robust foundation for future research and to facilitate more comprehensive analyses in the fields of the sociology of music and cultural historiography.
