Abstract

Objectives: Demanding as a dynamic social phenomenon reflects the diversity of citizens' needs and expectations and plays a strategic role in strengthening citizenship rights. The expansion of social networks has influenced this process, especially among adolescents, and has become increasingly important in shaping their perceptions, preferences, and patterns of demanding action. This study investigated the role of the characteristics of in-person and virtual social networks on the demanding behavior of students (second year of secondary school) in Kermanshah city, considering the mediating role of meaning-making. Methods: The present research is a survey and descriptive-analytical study, conducted using a multi-stage cluster sampling method with a sample size of 256 students aged 15 to 18 in the academic year 1403-1404. The data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire. Variance-based structural equation modeling was also used to test the hypotheses. Results: The findings show that in the process of shaping their desires, students first understand their meanings and underlying necessities in the context of relationships with others and then interpret them in a way that is consistent with their preferences, situations, and perceptual horizons. This process of meaning-making leads to the emergence of a diverse range of educational, cultural, social, and political demands. Conclusion: Social networks in both face-to-face and virtual dimensions act as productive arenas that facilitate the flow of ideas and the production of new definitions of student demands. Meanwhile, the intimate bonds and supportive patterns that form within networks provide conditions for students to recreate more complex frameworks of diverse social needs and demands through collaborative thinking and continuous exchange of perspectives. Applying Wellman's network society and Marshall's civil rights theories can lead to a deeper understanding of network interactions and the support capacities inherent in them in how collective demands are formed.
